Supporting Boise Commercial Trash & Recycling Requirements

The City of Boise's Curb It Commercial program is the City's solid-waste program for businesses and apartment buildings. Commercial services include trash, mixed recycling, and separate glass-recycling options, with collection service provided through the City's authorized service structure.

Boise City Code Title 10, Chapter 4 establishes requirements for commercial trash and recycling service. For multifamily properties using commercial service, property management should confirm the approved container type, capacity, collection frequency, service location, access requirements, billing account, and current recycling configuration.

Commercial properties must provide adequate space for trash and recycling containers. Container areas must also meet City access, foundation, sanitation, and collection requirements. Trash and recycling container lids must close properly, and wet or putrescible waste must be bagged before being placed into a waste container or compactor.

National Doorstep provides the resident-door-to-property-container portion of the apartment waste workflow. National Doorstep does not replace the property's City-authorized downstream trash or recycling collection service and does not transport ordinary resident waste off the property as part of standard doorstep collection.

Boise Apartment Recycling & Contamination Control

Boise's commercial mixed-recycling program requires accepted recyclable materials to be placed loose and unbagged in the recycling container, except for materials specifically authorized through a designated specialty recycling program.

Plastic trash bags and ordinary plastic film are not accepted as loose materials in Boise's mixed-recycling stream. Contaminated recycling containers may be skipped, serviced as trash, or become subject to additional service charges.

Common materials currently accepted in Boise commercial mixed recycling include:

• Corrugated cardboard that fits completely inside the container
• Paper and paperboard
• Aluminum and steel cans
• Accepted #1 and #2 plastic bottles, jugs, and jars
• Accepted #5 plastic food tubs

Glass is not placed in Boise's mixed-recycling container. Separate commercial glass-recycling service is available and should be configured independently where the property participates.

Optional Organic Waste Recycling for Boise Apartments

Boise separately encourages organic-waste recycling for businesses and multifamily residential properties. Commercial organics are not managed or billed through the City's standard commercial waste account in the same manner as regular trash and recycling.

Multifamily properties interested in food-scrap, yard-waste, or other qualifying organic-waste diversion should work with an appropriate registered commercial organic-waste service provider and confirm accepted materials directly with that provider.

New Construction & Remodeling Guidance

Boise developers and property teams should coordinate solid-waste infrastructure early in the design process. Boise City Code requires site-plan review for new construction or remodeling where permanent commercial trash and recycling service will be used.

City review is based on applicable Public Works Solid Waste Design Standards and the service requirements established by the Public Works Department.
