Fort Myers Apartment Recycling & Multifamily Solid-Waste Compliance

Fort Myers and Lee County apartment owners, asset managers, regional directors, and property management teams must coordinate mandatory recycling, approved waste collection, resident education, and service documentation. National Doorstep Pickup helps communities improve participation, reduce contamination, and verify doorstep collection while supporting NOI, operating efficiency, and resident retention.

Mandatory Recycling City of Fort Myers Ordinance 3502 requires recycling service for multifamily and commercial accounts. Confirm the applicable City service rules.
5+ Units Lee County Ordinance 07-25 requires an on-site recycling program for covered multifamily properties with five or more units on one parcel in unincorporated Lee County.
Weekly Collection Covered Lee County properties require at least weekly recycling collection. The designated franchise garbage hauler includes standard recycling service at no additional charge.

Four-Point Multifamily Recycling Checklist

  • 1. Verify jurisdiction and service. Confirm the parcel is inside Fort Myers or another Lee County jurisdiction. Identify the controlling ordinance, required franchise or authorized hauler, and the property's collection account.
  • 2. Provide recycling infrastructure. Establish accessible, labeled recycling containers, appropriate capacity, approved materials, and required collection frequency. Keep enclosures and collection routes clear.
  • 3. Educate residents. Provide property-specific sorting, container, set-out, and contamination instructions. Covered unincorporated County properties must educate residents at move-in and remind them at least annually.
  • 4. Monitor and document compliance. Retain applicable agreements, service information, resident notices, and corrective-action records. Address contamination, overflow, missed collections, and prohibited waste.

City of Fort Myers vs. Lee County: Mandatory Recycling Requirements

City of Fort Myers: Ordinance 3502 establishes mandatory recycling for multifamily, commercial, and applicable nonprofit accounts. Covered accounts must subscribe to recycling service through the City or an eligible private provider.

Properties must follow the applicable City Code, collection arrangements, recycling-container requirements, and property account classification. Do not automatically apply the County's five-unit definition or fine schedule to a property inside City limits.

City of Fort Myers Recycling · Fort Myers Code Chapter 70

Unincorporated Lee County: Ordinance 07-25 requires covered multifamily properties containing five or more units on one parcel to maintain an on-site recycling program.

The program must include appropriate recycling containers, required materials, collection service, resident education, and delivery to an approved recycling facility. The designated County franchise hauler provides standard multifamily recycling service without an additional collection charge.

County operational deadlines:

  • Newly constructed multifamily properties must begin recycling within 14 days after garbage service commences.
  • Resident education is required at move-in and at least annually.
  • Required recycling program information must be available for inspection. Certain off-site records must be supplied within 20 business days after a written County request.
